Worship Round-Up (October 25, 2015)

a weekly review of Sunday worship to provide resource and further reflection from our Sunday service.

Sermon:
"The Journey of Nebuchadnezzar"
Pastor Chuck Mullikin
Daniel 4
Listen to the sermon here.

In this week's sermon, Pastor Chuck highlighted King Nebuchadnezzar's change from self sufficiency as king to recognizing God as his king and the rightful recipient of praise and glory. We drew connection between the sermon and the music by emphasizing God as our king with "Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven". In Westchester's rendition of "O Worship the King" we refrain
"Lift up your voice to the glorious King
Let us enter His courts with praise.
He was, and is, and is to come,
The Lord is King forever!"
We continue our focus on missions and also emphasize Jesus as the great King who deserving of all praise with "Bright and Glorious". We responded after the service with communion and singing of "You are My King" and then ending with a song of celebration in our great salvation with a new arrangement of "What Wondrous Love is This".

Worship Round-Up (October 11, 2015)

a weekly review of Sunday worship to provide resource and further reflection from our Sunday service.

Sermon:

"Eyes on God"
Daniel 1
Pastor Josh Earhart
Listen to the sermon here

In this week's service we wanted to highlight the reality of God's sovereignty. At this time in our church we are studying Ezra and the minor prophet Haggai together and it perfectly correlates with the new sermon series through Daniel. God has a plan. God has a mission. God will see that through and we can trust in his promises even when the times seem most dire. The songs we chose to sing all highlight this sovereignty by affirming our trust in Him. We sing that our "One Comfort" is knowing our salvation is complete on the cross. We affirm that he is Lord and creator of all in "God of Wonders". We affirm that we cannot rely on and trust in our name, possessions, and abilities here on earth in "My Worth is Not in What I Own". We ended by reaffirming the greatness of our God in "How Great Thou Art".

Worship Coffeehouse Recap

We had so many people attend the coffeehouse this week! Thank you for all of your support, participation, and especially if you helped set up or clean up you are amazing!

Vision:

After the first coffeehouse we did a couple of months ago I began brainstorming improvements to the coffeehouse and what the future of such an event could look like. The first theme we put music to was Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Restoration-- the storyline of scripture (for a recap of the first event click here). This time we did the theme of The Atonement-- Christ's sacrifice on the cross, the various aspects, and what it means for us. The theology of the Atonement is what truly sparked my interest in studying theology and has become a passion of mine. By digging in deeper to what Christ accomplished in his death on the cross, we get a bigger and fuller picture of our salvation, and also we can have full assurance and peace of knowing that our sin is truly taken care of and we have been fully reconciled to Him. Below you will see the themes, songs, and verses we used to discuss the atonement.

Music:

Note: Unfortunately we cannot stream all of the songs we played that night due to copyright issues. The songs posted above are all in the public domain.

Worship Round-Up (September 20, 2015)

a weekly review of Sunday worship to provide resource and further reflection from our Sunday service.

Sermon

"Loneliness"
2 Timothy 4:9-18
Pastor Chuck Mullikin
Listen to the sermon here.

Pastor Chuck delivered an excellent sermon this week discussing something common to all of us-- Loneliness. The gospel brings people together and pulls us apart in order to fulfill the great commission. Our relationships here are only a taste of the fulness and completion of relationships in the age to come. For the times we experience loneliness in this life we are to cling to Jesus. We emphasized this in the songs we sang by telling God that our hearts are open to him in "Almighty God". We sing of His love and the eternal praise that is due to Him in "Here is Love". We cling to Jesus by singing "Jesus I Come" and "Oh God" (you never leave my side!). Listen or re-listen to the sermon and review the songs we sang this week, and we pray that it would be encouraging to you this week.

Worship Round-Up (August 30, 2015)

a weekly review of Sunday worship to provide resource and further reflection from our Sunday service.

Sermon
"Preach the Word"
2 Timothy 4:1-2
Pastor Dave MacKinnon
Listen to the sermon here

While studying this week over the passage that Pastor Dave would be preaching from, the line that kept sticking out was "Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead." It stands out that our reasoning to preach the word faithfully is because we are in submission to Christ who is our judge. It was apparent that we should sing of this great truth. In Before the Throne we sing of our confidence to stand before our judge who has all of our life written on His hands. It is not a place of worry of whether we will measure up because He is our "spotless righteousness". Along these same lines we sung the Lord's prayer together in "Father you are all we need" which speaks of our dependance upon our Father for everything in our life. We ended the service with "O Great God" which in our sending re-states our dependence, confidence, and also the responsibility laid upon us that because of the Gospel we should seek to glorify our Father in every aspect of our life.

Sermon

"Continue in the Word"
2 Timothy 3:16-17
by Pastor Dave MacKinnon
Listen to this sermon here

This week's service emphasized centering our life around the word. Timothy serves as our example of how we should train up our own children and those in the church to hear their whole lives the truth that comes from scripture. Listen to the sermon to hear testimony from those leading our children on how this happens at Westchester. We drew connections between the sermon and the music by singing about our love for the word and the need for the scripture in our lives with songs like "How Firm a Foundation" and "We Are Listening".  We also chose as a special music to sing the old hymn "I Love to Tell the Story" to reinforce the joy we have in retelling the Gospel Story from generation to generation. The devotion to the word is meant to make us "wise for salvation in Christ". It is because of this that we sing "He is Jesus" and "Behold Our God".

Worship Coffeehouse Recap

After this event on Sunday I received overwhelming support and desire to do more coffeehouses in the future. Thank you for your support and participation!

Vision
I've been kicking myself that it took me almost 2 years in this position at Westchester before I thought that this would be a good idea. Whenever I hear new songs that I think would be good for worship at Westchester I keep a running list. The list of songs I want to do but haven't implemented on a Sunday grew long. Songs of praise and adoration make it into the service quicker than others because I try and have songs reflect the sermon as much as possible and many of the songs listed below are songs that have very specific context to them. The idea for this casual environment where we can sing songs and hear new songs came from the desire to have these songs sung but not force them into Sunday mornings.

I'd like to draw specific attention to the last 3 songs we sang. They have this perspective of anticipating the new heavens and new earth which we will experience when Jesus returns. I am excited to introduce these songs because when we keep in perspective the new heavens and earth that await us, we see in perspective how our current life and the world around us pales in comparison to what we eagerly anticipate to come.

Worship Round-Up (June 28, 2015)

a weekly review of Sunday worship to provide resource and further reflection from our Sunday service.

Sermon

"An Approved Worker"
Bob Schaus
2 Timothy 2:14-26
Listen to sermon audio here

The overall message of the service yesterday between the preaching from 2 Timothy and the music we sang together was being approved workers for God's kingdom. We sang songs of God's worth-- O for a thousand; Behold Our God. We also asked for God's work to be done through us- Give us clean hands; What Love Is. While remembering that we are not working for our own sake because our worth is found in Christ and not in our earthly work. We choose not to sing song's completely focused on our actions and what we are promising to do. We aim to focus on what Christ has already done and how that motivates us to do His will. This is very recognizable in "What Love Is". In a day when "love" is watered down and is only motivated by love itself, we see that we only know how to love and what love truly is because we've read how Jesus laid down his life. (See 1 John 4 for more) It is out of that great truth that we then continue on singing-- because we know what love is, let us lay down our own lives for others.
